South River Cleanup

Mar 26, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

Free
Location: Everett Park

The three recent heavy rains, in November, at Christmas time, and last month, washed a huge amount of trash up on the riverbanks of the South River.

The South River Watershed Alliance has scheduled a cleanup, 9:30am to 1pm on Saturday March 26, for the worst-hit area at Albert Shoals on the DeKalb side of the river.  At that point in the river, the current tends to pile up trash — plastic bottles, crushed-up styrofoam, kids’ toys and more — along the banks on the DeKalb side.  The two pictures below show the trash problem at this location and where the river ends at Jackson Lake, where it’s even more of a mess.   This is caused by runoff from streets and yards upstream.  The storm sewer system does little to stop the trash flow, so we inherit it.

Gathering point for the cleanup will be the unpaved parking lot at the Everett Property ( which is part of the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve) on the east side of the Klondike Road near the bridge over the South River.

To make sure we have supplies for all of our volunteers please RSVP.

If you are participating in the event as part of Monadnock Madness you can get your passport stamp at the Davidson Arabia Mountain Nature Center.
