The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is the top destination in Rockdale County.
Natural Beauty
The natural beauty of this 2,000+ acre preserve and the artistry of its historic buildings set the stage for a place that speaks to the soul. The Monastery has always been open to the public, but in 2011, the monks incorporated a historic barn into a Monastic Heritage Center. The center includes an exhibit center and the largest bookstore of its kind in the Southeast. At the visitor center, guests can view a film about the history of the area, follow the history of monasticism through the ages and discover the fascinating story of how a group of monks chose Georgia as their home in 1944.
Built By The Monks
One of their most remarkable achievements is the construction of the Cloister and Abbey Church. Built by the monks themselves from poured concrete, the building is an engineering and architectural marvel. It has been called “Georgia’s Most Remarkable Concrete Building.”
The Monastery Visitor Center is open Tuesday – Saturday: 11 am to 4 pm. For more information, visit the MOHS website. For more images, visit our slideshow here.
