Ever wanted to write history? Now’s your chance with our first-ever Arabia Reads Field Note Writing Contest!
The Arabia Alliance publishes its own articles and personal essays called Field Notes that cover local histories, hidden historical figures or places, and fascinating untold stories in southeast Metro Atlanta. Now you have an opportunity to publish a history!
The contest kicks off February 15 and includes two divisions: the student contest (6-12th grade) and an adult contest. Submissions must be about a history within the boundaries of the National Heritage Area (click here to see our map) and should address one of the following themes of the Arabia Alliance:
- Culture and community
- Natural systems and ecology
- Granite industry and technology
- Early settlement
- Spiritual landscape
Contest Rules:
- Up to 1000 words (adult division)
- Up to 500 words (student division)
- Previously unpublished pieces only
- Must be manuscript formatted: double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman
- No submissions written by plagiarism technologies commonly called “AI”
- Winners will receive $250 each, publication on the Arabia Alliance website, and a free copy of Images of America: Arabia Mountain NHA
- Runners-up will receive $100 each, publication on our website, and branded Arabia Alliance gear
- Simultaneous submissions accepted, but please notify us if your piece is accepted elsewhere
- Deadline for all submissions is March 31, 2026 at 11:59pm

In the subject line, put “Field Note Writing Contest,” and put in the body of the email the following information: Name, phone number, student or adult division, and a brief bio. Winners will be announced in April!
