Queer Nature Sunset Hike

Oct 25 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

FREE

Come learn about queerness in nature on our guided hike and enjoy a sunset view from the peak at the end!

What to expect: Come celebrate LGBTQ+ history month with us! Join our guided nature hike, centered around queerness in nature, from jack-and-jill-in-the-pulpits and fungi to slugs and salamanders! We’ll finish our walk with a sunset view on the peak. This program is intended for queer people and allies. The full program lasts 2 hours. Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants for our time on the trail.

Program leaders: Your guides will be Ranger Karsten Bobb, a DeKalb County Park Ranger at Arabia Mountain, and Ranger Eliza Crofts, an Arabia Alliance Roving Ranger.

Where to meet: Meet us inside the Nature Center (3787 Klondike Rd.).

What to bring: Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and outdoor hiking shoes. Please bring your own water and any snacks you might need to stay energized and hydrated throughout the program. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection, as well as insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are available in front of the Nature Center. You will look for a brown building with red doors.

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for 12+.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome!

Weather contingency: This program will be held rain or shine unless conditions are deemed unsafe by DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs (RPCA).

Walking distance: Varies based on pace of the group but likely 3 miles.

Exposure: This walk is mostly under shaded tree canopy, but we will be finishing on the exposed peak.

Trail surface & accessibility: This program stays on established soft trails of mixed terrain. There are sections of the walk that are quite steep and also have exposed roots. Questions if this program will work for your mobility? Reasonable accommodations may be available upon request. To request an accommodation, please contact the program organizer at least 48 hours in advance of the event. Contact Ranger Karsten: karstenbobb@yahoo.com

Program Photos: We love documenting our programs and may share photographs on DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs’ websites, publications, and social media platforms. While participants are welcome to take their own photos, photographs taken by staff are generally intended for County documentation and promotional purposes and are not routinely distributed to participants.
