Prescribed Fire Field Trip

Sep 28, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Location:

Why do prescribed burns take place in GA State Parks? How do they benefit the habitats around you? Take a 3-mile hike through the unique grassland area of Panola Mountain State Park dubbed the ‘Power of Flight’ with our Natural Resource Manager. He will answer these questions and teach along the way while showing the fruits of resource management.

Join the Northern Natural Resources Manager, Phil Delestrez, on a 3-mile guided hike through the unique grassland Power of Flight area of Panola Mountain State Park. During the hike, Phil will cover the topics of prescribed burn science and natural resource management, explaining their importance, and how they impact the native flowers and pollinators in the park. This hike is being held as an optional field trip for those who attend the virtual Georgia Prescribed Fire Council meeting in September, and it is also open to the public. There is no charge for the program, however, all vehicles are required to pay/display a valid GA State Parks parking pass ($5). The hike will meet at the Alexander Lake parking lot near the Parker House and Alexander Lake Pavilion. Guests are highly recommended to bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Space is limited to 20 persons, so please call the Park Office at 770-389-7801 to register.

Event Fees and Phone Number: $5 parking. 770-389-7801.
