A Sea of Yellow

The daisies are here!

Every fall metro Atlanta’s granite outcrops are transformed as yellow daisies blanket Stone, Arabia, and Panola Mountains. Each year we celebrate this explosion of daisies with Daisy Days. Revel in the beauty of Stone, Arabia, and Panola Mountains as they transform into a sea of yellow blooms. You can celebrate daisies on your own or you can join our partners for online and in-person events throughout the month of September.

Triple Hike Challenge

While we love to celebrate the beauty of the daisies together during our Guided Triple Hike, we’re changing it up this year. Instead of a one-day guided hike, we’re celebrating Daisy Days all month long and encouraging you to “Hike as You Like.” It’s easy to participate in the Daisy Days Triple Hike challenge! All you need to do is hike Stone, Panola, and Arabia Mountains during the month of September to earn a special prize. You can challenge yourself and hike all the mountains in one day, or take your time all month long. You can go it alone, hike with friends, or even participate in a guided event. There’s no need to print out a passport and fill it with stamps. Simply take a picture (selfies encourage, but not required) of each hike and complete our Virtual Passport to get your prize. FAQs

There is no cost to participate in the challenge. However, Stone Mountain ($20) and Panola Mountain State Park ($5) require parking fees, and the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve is free. For more information on each site, click the on the links above.

No, participants can hike the peaks at their own pace during the entire month of September. But, we do have a very special prize package for the person or group who is the first to finish.

Daisy Days is in full swing all September long! While we have some virtual and in-person events, Daisy Days is a “Hike as You Like” adventure where you explore all three mountains on your own and at your own pace.

Because it’s a pristine monadnock and a National Natural Landmark, access to Panola Mountain is limited to guided hikes only. The good news is that there are scheduled hikes for September (pre-registration is required). If you can’t make it on a guided hike of the mountain, you can still earn your passport stamp by simply visiting Panola Mountain State Park.

All About Daisies

Technically a sunflower species, the yellow daisies (Helianthus porteri) are native to the rock outcrops of the Southeastern United States, especially in the granite formations of the Georgia Piedmont region. The metro-Atlanta area has a high concentration of this sunflower species, which bloom on our massive granite mountains. While these rock outcrops seem barren, especially during the scorching summers, fall and winter see a profusion of wildflowers grow out of patches of thin soil called “solution pits.” Daisy Days is an opportunity to celebrate the botanical bounty growing on the rock outcrops (also called “monadnocks”) as autumn begins.
