Birding Bike Tour at Arabia Mountain

Jun 14 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

FREE

Grab your bike and your binoculars! Join DeKalb Naturalists, Ranger Shaundon and Ranger Jonah, for a guided bicycle tour to explore bird species across Arabia Mountain! Along the way, we’ll stop at key habitat zones: meadows, forests, wetlands, and granite outcrops, to observe and listen for some of Arabia’s incredible birdlife.

This tour will feature a special stop at Wilburn Farm, a 19-acre habitat and former homestead within the preserve that is now being restored as native bird habitat in collaboration with Georgia Conservancy, Birds Georgia, and the Georgia Native Plant Society. This is an excellent opportunity to explore a culturally and ecologically significant landscape during peak summer bird activity.

Bike Rentals:
Need a bike? We’ll be offering bike rentals through Aztec Cycles for $25 (first come, first served).

What to Expect:

  • A relaxed 6–9 mile bike ride on PATH trails with moderate inclines.
  • 3–5 educational stops to explore unique bird habitats and practice bird identification.
  • Each stop will include a 0.25-0.5 mile hike.

This tour is a hybrid between a naturalist-led interpretive experience and a leisurely bike ride. If you're looking for an intense cardio workout or continuous pace, this may not be the best fit. We’ll make frequent stops to explore natural features, observe wildlife, and talk about the landscape. That said, inexperienced/younger riders should be mindful of their own limits and, particularly, parents/guardians should consider the limits of any youth they bring along.

The terrain includes some uneven surfaces and moderate inclines. There is also one really large hill climb towards the end of the tour (though the downhill ride after is majestic).

Tricycles are not appropriate for this event; participants should ensure they have a working bicycle suitable for paved trail riding. This is not a race, so any type of bike should do as long as it is functioning.

What to Bring:

  • A working bicycle suitable for paved trail riding (unless you are renting).
  • Helmet (recommended; required for rentals)
  • Water bottle and light snacks as preferred
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes
  • Binoculars (we have limited binocular available for free, but if you own birding binoculars, please bring them to allow others who may not have their own to borrow ours)
  • Backpack or small bag for binoculars and other personal items
