AmeriCorps and Fitness Team Up in the Heritage Area

An AmeriCorps program has taken root in the Heritage Area and promises to reach new visitors and inspire additional community involvement. The program was created in partnership between the AMHAA and Panola Mountain State Park and will focus on helping the local community lead healthy lives.

AmeriCorps is a government sponsored service program that addresses critical needs in communities all across America. Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. The Heritage Area program will include two members; London Slone, and Amanda Dixon who are undergraduates at Georgia Perimeter College. They will be based out of Panola Mountain State Park and will each serve 20 hours per week through September 2013.

Two complimentary goals will make up the heart of the program. The first is to reach out to low income families, children, and seniors to inform them of healthy outdoor activities they can participate in at both Arabia and Panola Mountains. The second is to lead several free fitness hikes, fun runs, boot camps, healthy eating classes, and other activities for people of different skill levels.
